Lac La Biche Equipment Rental: Serving the Heart of Rural Alberta with Quality and Dedication

In 2006, the idea for Lac La Biche Equipment Rental was born when Dale Hammons, working on a residential subdivision, identified a gap in the local market. Struggling to find all the necessary equipment, he recognized the need for a rental service tailored to the community’s needs. Meanwhile, his son, fresh off a Power Engineer contract in Argentina, took up the challenge to run this new venture. Relocating to Lac La Biche from Bonnyville, the younger Hammons embraced the opportunity, partnering with his father to create a reliable equipment rental business.

Starting small, they soon realized the importance of having an in-house mechanic. Impressed by the skills of a neighboring mechanic, Lorn Routhier, they invited him to join the business as a shareholder. His expertise became a cornerstone of the company’s success, reinforcing their commitment to offering top-notch service.

Lac La Biche Equipment Rental provides a diverse range of equipment, including excavation tools, compaction equipment, skid steers with attachments, light towers, heaters, hand tools, and trailers. Whether for construction or a personal project, their inventory caters to a wide variety of needs in the community.

The journey hasn’t been without its challenges. The company weathered two significant financial storms: the 2008 financial crisis and the 2015 oil price crash. By cutting costs, reducing owners’ wages, and carefully managing monthly expenses, they navigated both crises successfully. These experiences shaped their approach to resilience and adaptability in a fluctuating economy.

For Hammons, running a business in Lac La Biche is about more than providing a service—it’s about being part of the community. From sponsoring events like ice races, mud bogs, and rodeos to contributing to Lac La Biche Summer Days, the business actively supports local traditions and events, fostering a sense of connection and pride.

The support of Community Futures Lac La Biche has been instrumental in the business’s growth. With a revolving line of credit, the company enjoys flexibility and efficiency in purchasing equipment. Unlike traditional banks, which require extensive paperwork for every transaction, this system allows them to manage purchases and payments seamlessly, providing stability even during challenging times.

Reflecting on their journey, Hammons emphasizes the importance of exceptional customer service, a value that has cultivated loyalty and trust among their clients. Their commitment to quality and reliability has positioned them as a trusted partner for businesses and individuals alike.

Looking ahead, Lac La Biche Equipment Rental is entering an exciting new chapter. Recently approved as a Bobcat dealership, they will now offer compact tractors, mowers, and UTVs. This expansion aims to serve not only Lac La Biche but also neighboring communities like Bonnyville, Cold Lake, and St. Paul.

With deep roots in the community and a forward-looking vision, Lac La Biche Equipment Rental is more than just a business—it’s a testament to resilience, innovation, and the power of local entrepreneurship.
