Building a Greener Business Starts Here: Introducing the Green Futures Program

Dynamic Content Image

At Community Futures Lac La Biche, we believe that the future of our local economy is green — and it starts with the small and medium-sized businesses that power our community every day.

That’s why we’re proud to announce the launch of the Green Futures Loan Program, a new financing initiative designed to help local businesses and commercial property owners invest in sustainable, energy-efficient, and innovative projects.

Why We Created the Green Futures Loan Program

Across northern Alberta, business owners are facing rising energy costs and increasing pressure to modernize their operations. According to the Alberta Chambers of Commerce, “an increasing number of Alberta SMEs and citizens have been struggling to pay rising electricity costs,” with utility bills reaching record highs in late 2022 and 2023.

At the same time, many business owners want to make improvements — upgrading equipment, improving efficiency, or adopting cleaner technologies — but upfront capital costs remain one of the biggest barriers to action.

The Green Futures Loan Program bridges that gap. It provides flexible, accessible financing to help businesses move forward on projects that make operations more efficient, reduce environmental impact, and strengthen long-term resilience.

Our goal is simple: to support local businesses in building a more competitive, sustainable, and future-ready economy for the Lac La Biche region.

What the Program Offers

Whether you’re a small shop downtown, a growing agribusiness, or a commercial property owner, the Green Futures Program can help you invest in upgrades that matter.

Program Highlights:

  • Flexible financing designed to fit your project’s size, timeline, and cash flow.
  • Direct-to-vendor payments for secure, transparent disbursement.
  • Supports a wide range of projects — from energy-efficient retrofits and renewable-energy systems to clean transportation, waste reduction, and digital modernization.

Every project funded through Green Futures helps move Lac La Biche County closer to a cleaner, stronger, and more innovative local economy.

How It Works

  1. Review your project’s eligibility. Projects must show measurable environmental or operational benefits (such as lower energy use or improved efficiency).
  2. Apply using the Green Futures Loan Progam Application Form.
  3. Attach vendor quotes and relevant project details.
  4. Submit your application to Community Futures Lac La Biche.

Approved funds are released directly to vendors, ensuring accountability and completion quality. Our local team is here to guide you through every step — from refining your idea to seeing your project through.

Aligned with Regional and National Goals

The Green Futures Program supports the Government of Canada’s Green Prairie Economy Framework, which outlines a roadmap for a “prosperous, sustainable, and inclusive” Prairie economy focused on clean growth.
It also aligns with Alberta’s Emissions Reduction and Energy Development Plan, which aims to “reduce emissions, attract investment, support jobs, and work with Indigenous communities” to strengthen Alberta’s energy future.

When you invest in your business through Green Futures, you’re not just upgrading your operations — you’re helping advance a regional vision for sustainable growth, innovation, and environmental stewardship.
